On restaurant-lined Kiyamachi, through a wooden gate and down a stone-paved alley, a charming house with light pouring from the mushiko window and lattice entryway welcomes guests. Open the lattice door and a courtyard garden appears. Open the door to the rest of the house and at the far end, through a large picture window, guests can see the Kamo River, on the opposite bank a riverfront promenade, and in the distance the hills of Higashiyama.
During cherry blossom season, open the mushiko window on the second floor and view the flowers in bloom along the Takase River that runs along Kiyamachi Street. From the first floor terrace and the second floor windows, look across the river to see weeping cherry trees in bloom and willows with young leaves.
Enjoy nature in the middle of the city. Bird watch for herons, ducks, hawks, and kites.
In autumn, the Higashiyama hills blaze in color, in summer, the water of the river cools the terrace, and in early August, the fires of Daimonji Mountain at the Bon festival are easily viewed.
On the second floor, the ceiling has been removed to expose beautiful wood beams. Soak away the exhaustion of your travels in the wood bath overlooking a small tsuboniwa garden. The whole house is outfitted with high-speed optical Internet.
