Kyoto, the former capital city of Japan, has a long dynamic history and deep-rooted traditions. The dignified look of temples and shrines and their gardens strike visitors with their refinement. After visiting such elegant places, spending the night in a modern hotel makes the experiences of the day all too surreal. To fully enter the world of traditional Kyoto, Iori offers a variety of traditional townhouses (machiya) to guests wishing to stay a few days or a few weeks in Kyoto.
Machiya are the traditional homes of the common townspeople in Kyoto. The story of these homes is the history of Kyoto. Typically machiya are wooden and have two stories. The entryway is usually earthen floored and leads into the kitchen towards the back of the house, which generally also has an earthen floor and high cielings with open wooden beams. Inside the house, both tatami rooms and wooden floored rooms are common as is the traditional tsuboniwa or "bottle garden" in a small court yard.
Iori's purpose in renovating machiya is to preserve the city's architectural heritage and the machiya's original beauty, while renovating the houses to accomodate modern lifestyles. Modern kitchen appliances and bathroom facilities as well as comfortable sofas and high quality futon bedding make guests' stay in the machiya very comfortable. Although Iori does not provide the same services as hotels, all basic amenities such as towels and tableware are avaliable, and we will clean the house during your absence. We also provide concierge services, and recommend a course in the ORIGIN arts program, which provides an introduction to traditional Japanese arts.
